Chapter Six
The curious thing was that Bridget slept late. She had thought that she would never sleep at all, she thought it had served her right to have heard something unpleasant, for when she was a child her mother had insisted to her that âlisteners never hear any good for themselvesâ.
She dressed quickly and went to the patient. Janet had brought up her breakfast. It was one of those perfect days, with the hot sunshine pouring into the window, the sea pale blue and flat, never so much as a single sign of a wave on it. Gail was feeling so much better that she said she would dress and get into her wheel-chair.
âI want to go into the garden,â she said. âIt always looks quite lovely on a day like this; come along with me.â
So they went together, with Gail in the chair. She was excited that Frank Dene was coming, for she had the greatest faith in him and longed to see him. The garden was already quite hot in the sunshine, and smelt of the loveliest flowers of all the year.
She talked of the wreck it had been when she bought it. A barn, whose roof had crashed in, and lay in a pile of old slates and tiles on the ground. How she had gone into every detail. The architects were not too pleased about her ideas, and had told her that she would never achieve her end. But she did! All the neighbourhood insisted that the place was haunted, and one of these days she would be worried to death that she had ever come here.
âBut I am not like that,â she said. âI am not a person who is susceptible to ghosts. I have never been scared of them, if there are such things. Sometimes I think they are just shadows cast by the past, nothing real at all. I came here because I loved the house.â
âAnd to me, in spite of everything that I hear about it, it is a kind house,â said the girl.
âYou are right there, that is exactly what it is, a kind house. Years ago when the Lord of the Manor lived here, it was a very grand house indeed; then it fell into disrepair, and the wreckers got it. They were never good to houses, and just hacked them about. I daresay men died here, they would not have cared, but that bad time is over.â
âAnd you have never been afraid of it?â
âNo,â and she laughed. She had perhaps the most attractive house in all the world. âI opened up all the windows, so that the fresh air and the sunshine came into it. I felt the place needed this. They are even open on to the sea itself, and today it is happy. There are extra rooms for stores, and one of these days I shall turn them into spare bedrooms, so that I can have friends galore to stay here. I love friends, you see.â
It would be a bright idea to have more spare bedrooms.
