Bringing Butch a generous helping of heated beefaroni, I handed him the bowl and a spoon.
âSlightly burnt canned beefaroni,â Butch said with a smirk on his lips as he took the bowl from me. âIâm definitely gonna have to get you a cookbook, boy.â
I couldnât believe this fucker. After everything he had done to me, he didnât like my cooking.
âGet me another beer and bring me a napkin,â he said, letting his eyes turn back to a travel show about Chile.
I walked heavy-footed back into the kitchen of the trailer. Robotically, I tore off a paper towel and grabbed him another beer.
âGood, boy,â he said complimentary as he handed me his empty beer bottle. âAfter ya throw that away, make yourself a bowl and come join me.â
âYes, Sir,â I said unenthusiastically, walking back into the kitchen.
A few moments later, I joined him on the couch.
The couch was a three-seater, and I purposely left the space between Butch and me unfilled.
The dark-haired giant narrowed his eyes. âSit next to me, Colby!â
I didnât say anything, but I moved closer to him.
âSee, sitting next to your old man isnât so bad, kid.â
For a few minutes, we sat in silence just watching the travel show.
âIâve always wanted to go to Chile,â Butch said from out of the blue.
âReally?â I asked. It seemed worth asking. âWhy Chile?â
âWell, when I was in jail, I used to always check travel books out of the prison library. I saw me pictures from all over this world! I dunno.â He shrugged. âSomething about seeing all those pictures made me feel freer somehow. I read up a lot on travelinâ, and Chile caught my attention. I would love to see them mountains and that breathtaking Pacific Coast.â
âHave you ever been out of the country?â I asked.
âNaw, Iâve been to Tennessee and South Carolina, but thatâs it,â Butch said remorsefully. âIâve havenât been able to do much travelinâ.â
âIâve never been out of Asheville,â I replied glumly as I took a bite of the beefaroni.
âWell, ya have now,â he replied. âWeâre several hours up in the mountains from Asheville.â
âOh,â I replied vaguely. My suspicions about our general location had sort of been confirmed.
âSince youâve never been out of town, maybe Iâll take ya to some real cool places with views. Maybe even take ya over to Tennessee,â Butch offered. âOf course, Iâd have to tie ya up for obvious reasons.â He paused. âI could just tie your wrists and ankles and sit ya in the front of the van with me.â
âSure, Sir,â I replied, realizing that Butch wasnât taking any chances on me getting away...
