AT THE CLICK of a key in the door lock, Jimmy looked up from his book. A second later, Emma closed the door to her apartment, turned and froze. “Jimmy!” Her reaction did not suggest that seeing him was a pleasant surprise.

He got to his feet with a smile. As he took in how wet she was, his smile faded. “Been for a walk in the rain?”

“Um, yes, as a matter of fact. I miss the English weather.”

She unbuttoned her raincoat, and he moved to lift it off her shoulders. Taking the damp coat from him without actually meeting his eyes, she hurried across the room to the hallway. “Just let me hang this in the lavatory.”

Emma was always easy to read, and easiest when she was trying to hide something. Jimmy propped his hips against the back of the couch and waited for her to reappear. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing.” She still looked surprised. And distracted. “I mean, I just didn’t expect to see you here.”

Jimmy held out his hand. After an obvious hesitation, she took it and let him pull her close. He kissed her knuckles, her wrist, where her pulse pounded like a pile driver, her cheek and then her mouth. “Mmm. Coffee,” he murmured against her lips. “Coffee and cream.”

She relaxed finally and kissed him back the way she always did, with absolute surrender. He loved it…but it worried him, too. In two weeks Emma had never asked for anything personal, in bed or out of it. It was a nice change from the self-absorbed women he’d known in the past. But didn’t she have some desires of her own?

He let the kiss end, let her step back, though he kept hold of her fingers. “I thought I’d drive you to work. But maybe I should have called first.” They’d exchanged keys. This was the first time he’d used his, and now he knew why. He wasn’t sure where the trouble lay, only that what had felt so right five hours ago now seemed awkward. Troubled. “Where’d you walk to?”

Emma closed her eyes and shook her head. “This is ridiculous. I should know better.”

“What are you talking about?”

Still holding his hand, she pulled him around to sit on the couch with her. “I went to find Harlow.”

Jimmy froze. “You did what?”

“I haven’t seen him for two weeks. I wanted to know that he’s all right.”

“And is he?”

She gazed at him a second. “You’re angry.”

He stood up again. “Yeah, I guess I am. Where did you go looking for this drug addict, Emma?”

“Tiffany said—”

“Jeez…Tiffany told you where to look?”

Emma got to her feet. “Don’t say that as if you intend to sack her.”

“I’m not sure I can afford to keep a bartender that dumb.” He pulled in a deep breath, drove his hands into the pockets of his slacks. “So you just went waltzing over to the worst part of town, asking anybody on the street for Harlow?”

“I took a cab. I asked a shop owner, who suggested a newspaper vendor, who had seen him.
