Chapter Six

Yahweh, Mot and Behemoth

The title of this chapter reminds us that we are wrestling with the problem of the relationship of God and death. We have seen already that behind the basic images of the womb and the netherworld is the imagery of darkness and shadow where the physical and the supernatural merge into each other. This has prepared the way for the fourth and most fundamental image of death, found in those passages where God appears as tormentor and is described in terms reminiscent of an underworld demon. There are two further issues to be addressed; namely, is there a figure, like the Canaanite Mot, god of death, who is not simply a rhetorical figure but a real actor in the drama, and if so, how does it relate to the mysterious figure of Behemoth?
