It was twenty minutes later that an exceptionally attractive young woman walked through the entrance hallway to the Double Ace and moved calmly up the stairs. Both the doorman and the receptionist smiled respectfully and wished her luck as she passed. She gave the receptionist a smile and completely demoralised the heavily breathing George with an alluring glance. At the top of the stairs she halted and calmly regarded the first of the gambling rooms before her from the doorway.

If it was unusual for a woman to arrive alone and without an escort the doorman on the landing showed no surprise. He also wished her luck as she contemplated the scene before her. His eyes devoured her with a carnal stare that would have made a respectable woman cringe.

However, this woman ignored him, for she was clearly accustomed to such glances. At the moment she was clad in a sheath of black velvet that held her supple figure closer than a lover’s caress. A broad white belt with a silver buckle was drawn tight around her slim waist to accentuate the proud thrust of her breasts. Her high-heeled shoes which had come straight from Bond Street were black, perfectly shaped and with a gold-spangled bow on the instep. The smooth lines of her legs were encased in sheerest nylon. She wore a white fur wrap around her shoulders that set off to perfection the cascade of flame-red hair.

Her dark green eyes settled instantly on Simon Larren and a close observer would have noticed a little muscle ripple with excitement in the whiteness of her throat. He was looking away from her into the next room and she followed the direction of his gaze. For a moment she failed to recognise the skinny back and shoulders of the man Larren was watching, and then a movement of the crowd gave her a glimpse of the thick horn-rimmed glasses.

She drew a long slow breath and then backed out of the room before Larren had a chance to notice her. Turning, she started back down the stairs. She looked back into the startled face of the doorman and explained sweetly. “I’ve just remembered, I forgot to put the elephant out.”

The man gaped after her as she disappeared down the stairs.

The woman was Claudine.
