[2] To use the language of theology, Catholicism sees sanctification as one of the grounds of justification; Protestant theology sees sanctification as following justification. Sometimes uninformed Protestants accuse Catholicism of teaching ‘salvation by works’ as opposed to the Protestant view of ‘salvation by faith’. This is not accurate. Catholicism teaches salvation by faith plus works—that is, our good works and character transformation, effected by our own effort, by the work of the Spirit in us, and through the sacraments of the church, are a vital part of what saves us in the end. The Protestant view is that salvation comes through faith alone—that is, that our good works and character transformation through the Spirit play no part in God accepting us. He accepts us only because Christ has washed us clean. The good works are a consequence of and response to justification, not one of the grounds of justification.
