CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Ilse tensed as Agent Sawyer maneuvered the borrowed sedan along the second floor of the hospital parking lot. Her stomach twisted in knots. The horrors of last night still flashed across her mind's eye. She didn't remember everything from her past. That particular, cruel memory hadn't been one she'd recalled. Her hand hovered near her lips, feeling the smooth skin. Just a nightmare? Ilse shivered, feeling restless. Partly from the dreams, but partly a strange sense of premonition. Everything about this case stretched her capacity. Treating a patient was one thing, but dealing with victims, another thing entirely.
Sawyer pulled to a complete stop, put the car in park and stepped out into the hospital parking lot. Ilse followed a bit more hesitantly, and, as the doors slammed shut behind them, a small beeping sound emanated in the concrete and asphalt area.
Sawyer frowned, fishing his phone from his pocket, glancing at the number then shoving the device back, deep out of sight.
Scowling, he began marching in the direction of the sliding hospital doors.
âWho was that?â Ilse asked, trying to keep up.
Sawyer didn't reply.
She picked up the pace. âWas it Rawley? Sheriff Culpepper? Is everything alright?â
Sawyer shot her a sidelong glance. âNot about the case.â
âOh?â Ilse hesitated, wrinkling her nose.
Noticing her look of confusion, Sawyer let out a little huff. âIt was my wife,â he said with a shrug, then he stepped through the sliding glass doors leading from the parking lot to the second level of the hospital.
Ilse stood rooted to the spot for a moment as the sliding doors did a little dance, opening, half closing, opening again as the sensors tried to determine if she was coming or going.
Now, though, standing in the parking lot, staring after Sawyer, her mouth hung open. She blinked and then, frowning, hurried through the sliding doors herself. The sound of her footsteps shifting from the quiet tap against concrete to the gentle squeak against tiled floor.
Sawyer was already leaning against a half-oval reception desk, tapping a button with a laminated sign that read âBuzz for Attendant.â
âI didn't know you were married,â Ilse said, coming to a halt next to the lanky agent.
Sawyer rubbed a hand against his pocket with the phone and shrugged.
She frowned at him, but supposed it wasn't like he'd concealed anything. Ilse had heard something about a divorce... or separation. She'd even pegged him as someone previously married, but she hadn't realized the woman was still in his life.
Not that it mattered.
Did it?
Why should it matter?
She crossed her arms, leaning against the counter now as well and staring down a hall as a woman in blue scrubs hurried towards them.
The woman seemed to detect Ilse's frown and she matched it with one of her own. The nurse was tall, even taller than Sawyer, with broad shoulders and a thick chin. Her uniform seemed a size too small for her large frame, but the large nurse didn't seem to mind as, still frowning, she came to a halt next to a four-wheeled desk chair behind the counter.
