“Sorry, dude, but this is important.”

Disengaging himself from Glenn’s arms, Noel paused to stare at the other man with

his arms crooked at the elbow and his head bent down and shook his head, turning to follow

a beckoning Thomas into the living-room.

“What the hell are you two doing here?” Noel hissed in a stage whisper, glancing

over his shoulder as if he expected Glenn to burst in at any minute.

Thomas ran exasperated hands through his hair and then reached inside his clothing

and pulled out a little golden hip flask, unscrewing the top and drinking from it before he

spoke. “My boss knows what I did and he’s put a condition on your being allowed to stay.”

“A condition,” Noel’s eyes narrowed, “what condition?”

“It’s really stupid and completely unfair in my opinion—”

“Thomas, what condition?” Noel ground out.

Amos rolled his eyes and nudged Thomas out of the way. “It’s like this, kid. Christian

said that if Glenn doesn’t tell you he loves you by the time the sun rises, you’re back in

Santa’s rocking chair.”

“What?!” Noel said incredulously. “He can’t do that. Can he do that? That’s such a

crock.”

“Look,” Thomas said quickly, his eyes going to the open doorway connecting the

living-room with the hall. “I can’t hold time still for long. This is the deal. All you have to do

is make him say it. Glenn is really open to suggestion and,” he winked lasciviously, “come

on…who doesn’t let those three little words slip when they’re in the heat of…well you know.”

“Are you certifiable?” Noel said, annoyance creeping into his voice. “Make him say

it? I’m not going to make him say it!” He began to pace up and down the tiny living-room.

“And you call yourself Angels? Aren’t you supposed to be full of love and light and

benevolence or some shit like that? You’re like Abbott and Costello Meets It’s a Wonderful

Life! I can’t believe it! You basically want me to fuck him senseless and while he can’t

remember his own name, let alone mine, suggest that he tells me he loves me?”

“Get off your romantic high horse!” Amos yelled. “You wanna stay don’t you? You

want your happy ever after? I thought you loved him,” the last was said in a sarcastic drawl.

Noel stopped pacing and stared into Amos’s deep blue eyes. “I do love him and he

loves me, I know he does. Which is why I’m not going to do it. There is nothing I want him to

say more than those three words, but I’d rather be a lump of molded plastic than hear them

like that. Thanks for the heads up, but I’ll take my chances.”

“Are you crazy?” Thomas said his mouth agape. “I can’t say anything to him. I can’t

use the power of suggestion… it’s against the rules.” He followed Noel down the hall and

back into the kitchen where he watched the man slide back into Glenn’s waiting arms.

“’Bye, Thomas,” Noel said softly, turning his head and smiling at the confused Angel.

“And whatever happens… thank you.”

“Good luck, kid,” Amos murmured, an understanding smile on his lips.

Thomas couldn’t echo that understanding. He didn’t understand.
