Chapter Seventeen

Saturday Morning

Kate dug into a big stack of pancakes plus home fries and sausage with applesauce. Harry joined her after he got them each a cup of tea. As they were finishing, Gill and George returned and everyone drifted back into the kitchen until the table was full. "Well, they've put Miss Durgin into a psych ward under twenty-four-hour observation since she did try to murder you two. There is still no trace of Baturin. Des said that you two were followed by someone to Lake Placid."

"Yes, Gil, I wrote down the license number, color, and model for you. He may have realized by now that we're not there and be heading back, though the snow seems to be mounting up." Kate told him.

George informed them that he might have to fill in on storm duty since this one is now predicted to drop over a foot, maybe even a foot and a half. "At this rate, we won't need cars, we'll need dog sleds."

Kate and Harry laughed. When people stared at them, Harry explained that the trip to Lake Placid was to get Kate's Christmas present, a dog sled.

"You went to see Hiawatha?" George asked.

"Yes, the place is magical," Kate told him.

"It certainly is."

Harry stood and moved behind Kate. "That was the second reason for our trip. I know that it's been forgotten in all the fuss, but this is our honeymoon which so far has consisted of two dead bodies, and meaning no offense, two cops, two FBI, a forensic pathologist, a brother-in-law, and grandmother. This was not the honeymoon I planned. Plus, Kate reminded me that Christmas is right around the corner. We need to wrap this up fast. I'm putting Sadie and my people on it. Ann, I would like you to contact as many people you know who might have been at the party back then. Sadie will help you with contacts. We need to know where Baturin has been for sixty years. From what Vivian said to us, he's been able to keep her here to watch over the bodies all this time. Ann, did you have any success in finding how she got into the house?"

"None. Though, now that she realizes that Dillon is around, I suspect, she won't try that again."

Gil cleared his throat. "About that. We have ordinances here concerning dog bites. Though I'm sure it was justified, he will need to be taken and quarantined until a judgment is made."

Kate's back straightened. "Excuse me, Gil, but is that the case when one of your cops injures a criminal during an active crime takedown?"

"No, but they are police officers."

"Harry, could you hand me my purse, please?"

Harry smiled and reached for her purse on the counter behind him and pulled out her wallet, handing it to her. She reached into her wallet and pulled out a laminated card and a badge slapping them on the table in front of Gil. "Dillon holds the rank of sergeant in the state of Connecticut, but he is also a licensed police officer in New York and the rest of New England.
