Minor goddess; possible name for Frigg.

Snorri lists Hlín twelfth in his catalog in Gylfaginning of goddesses among the æsir and says, “She is put to watch over those people whom Frigg wishes to protect from some danger. For that reason there is a proverb that the one who gets away hleinir (‘protects’?).” The name is common as the base word in woman kennings in skaldic poetry. Völuspá, stanza 53, says that the second sorrow of Hlín will occur when Odin goes to fight the wolf at Ragnarök, and the bright killer of Beli (i.e., Frey) goes against Surt; “then Frigg’s joy will perish.” If Hlín is Frigg, her first sorrow would have been the death of Baldr.
