U.S. News & World Report puts it best when it reports that the college that fits you best is one that:
â¢Offers a degree that matches your interests and needs
â¢Provides a style of instruction that matches the way you like to learn
â¢Provides a level of academic rigor to match your aptitude and preparation
â¢Offers a community that feels like home to you
â¢Values you for what you do well5
MAKE THE MOST OF CAMPUS VISITS
If itâs at all practical and feasible, you should visit the campuses of all the schools youâre considering. To get a real feel for any college or university, you need to walk around the campus, spend some time in the common areas where students hang out, and sit in on a few classes. You can also sign up for campus tours, which are typically given by current students. This is another good way to see the campus and ask questions of someone who knows. Be sure to visit the specific school or building that houses your possible major as well. The website and brochures wonât be able to convey that intangible feeling youâll get from a visit.
Make a list of questions that are important to you before you visit. In addition to the questions listed in the section âFinding a College That Fits Your Personality,â consider these questions as well:
â¢What is the makeup of the current freshman class? Is the campus diverse?
â¢What is the meal plan like? What are the food options?
â¢Where do most of the students hang out between classes? (Be sure to visit this area.)
â¢How long does it take to walk from one end of the campus to the other?
â¢What types of transportation are available for students? Does campus security provide escorts to cars, dorms, and so on at night?
