CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
FRIDAY
Brian looked up from his computer when the postal worker entered the Newark Observer office. The noise of the midday Main Street traffic followed her in, then ceased as soon as the door closed behind her. She greeted Mildred and placed a small stack of envelopes on the front desk. She waved toward Brian.
âHey Mr. Wilder,â she said.
He cringed at the greeting. She looked to be twenty-two, maybe twenty-three at most. Calling him Mr. Wilder just made him feel old. âHello, Janice.â
âIs it true what theyâre saying about those two murders? Were they killed because of some nasty secrets in their past?â
This was the fourth time in twenty-four hours that someone was concerned about being the next victim because of their less-than innocent lifestyle. The Delaware Post-Gazette had a lot to answer for. âIâm not sure thatâs quite what was reported.â
âIâve got too many skeletons in my closet,â Janice said. âDonât want to be the next to end up dead.â
Brian tried to reassure her. âI donât think youâve got anything to worry about.â
Janice smiled, slung her letter bag over her shoulder, and then pushed through the door and out onto Main Street.
After the Janice was gone, Mildred looked up from the mail sheâd been sorting. âThat girl better be doubly careful. Iâve heard about the shenanigans she gets up to.â
Brian laughed and returned his gaze to the computer but continued to watch Mildred over the top of the screen. There were three wire baskets stacked on the corner of her desk. She placed bills in the top basket and slipped one envelope in the second basket. Must be a check, he thought. All other mail went into the bottom basket. Heâd look through everything later. A smile crossed Mildredâs face and she rose from her chair.
âLook. A postcard from Chloe.â She moved toward him waving the small flimsy card. âShe must be enjoying her vacation.â
Mildred handed it to him across his desk. The photo was of Cinderellaâs Castle in Disney World. âWith Love from the Magic Kingdomâ was printed across the bottom of the photo in white, flowing letters. He turned the card over and read the brief inscription on the back. In a few succinct words, the other Observer reporter described her trip and all the fun she was having with her boyfriend, Nathan. Brian smiled, not able to remember the last time he had been to Disney World. Thirteen or more years ago? Allison couldnât have been more than ten, possibly eleven at the time. She ran up to every costumed character and gave them a big hug. And the princesses . . . Allison had been enamored by every princess theyâd found. Sheâd stand a few feet away and act shy, like she was afraid to approach. Sarah would nudge Allison forward, and the princessâwhichever one it was at the timeâwould bow down and greet his shy young daughter with reverence and beauty. He felt a pang in his heart and swallowed hard to keep from getting choked up by the memory.
