Chapter 17

D awn winced as Galen dropped her wrists, turned on a heel and stalked purposefully from the room. The air snapped and cracked in his wake, hot like a forest fire. The door to his bedroom opened with a thunderous crash.

She wasn’t sure what to do, so she stayed right where she was, with her back pressed against the front entry.

She’d seen angry demons before. Demons she’d tracked and surprised in their lairs, demons who knew they were about to be crystallized. Demons who couldn’t believe a mere mortal woman could disrupt their evil plans—and had been proved wrong. But she’d never seen any as angry as Galen was right now.

Because she’d defied him? Because of a Cadre mission statement over which she had no control? Or could he somehow sense the chaotic emotions raging within her over him, despite her best efforts to conceal them?

Emotions she should be angry about, not him.

God help her.

She was falling in love with Galen McManus.

Sure she’d been attracted to him—okay, had a wicked crush on him—

since the first moment they’d met. But this…this was different. She’d tried to ignore it. Done her best to deny it. To herself. Certainly to him. But this morning when he’d stalked across that huge room at Pandora’s Box like an avenging angel, coming to her rescue, there’d been no mistaking the feeling that swooped down to capture her heart. Love.

She’d felt it in every molecule of her body when she’d seen him attacked by their enemy, blood pouring from his wounds. She’d felt it deep in her soul, a primal scream of anguish when she’d thought he was about to die.

It was there now, staring her tauntingly in the face. She was teetering on an emotional brink, about to fall hopelessly, helplessly in love with the man.

Except he wasn’t a man. He was a demon.

He was one of them. One of the fiends that had peered back at her from the void at Pandora’s Box, waiting for her to be devoured, or worse. Perhaps not as evil as some. But…

He was not human.

She’d seen his awesome powers, what he could do with a mere flick of the wrist. She’d felt his bespelling magic, how he could influence her with a single thought or brush of his hand.

It scared her to death. He scared her to death.

She could not fall in love with a demon. She could not. She had to keep her feelings well hidden. Not give in to them. Ever. She could fulfill her part of their bargain. Only three nights left. Sex with Galen was good. More than good, it was amazing.

But she had to stick to their original arrangement. He must come to her at night, in her dreams, as they’d agreed. She couldn’t be around him any other time. She couldn’t risk getting to know him any better. Couldn’t risk seeing the goodness beneath his bluster, or the warmth in his eyes when he looked at her, or allow herself to feel the tenderness in his loving touch.
