CHAPTER 28

Two words on their own meant nothing. Like a letter torn in half, only a piece of the story could exist, fragmented. You could glean some context, sure. But the blanks had to be filled in. And when that happens, the mind runs wild.

That’s how Jack had felt in general for the past thirty-six hours. He’d been working with two halves of a story and couldn’t figure out how to match them up.

The hit on Johanna.

Oskar the club owner’s place in all this.

Noah’s deception.

The compromised doctor.

The hit team sent to kill him at the farm.

None of it made sense until he heard the name Meadowcroft. It took precisely a half-second for the memory of Tobias saying the name David to scream in Jack’s mind. On their own? Coincidences. Together?

David Meadowcroft.

A man he’d met when Feng, the Old Man, had offered him a job to take out a guy named Marcus Hamilton Thanos. A woman, an FBI agent—who turned out to be a double agent—named Lexi, had been involved. She perished. When Jack went back for David Meadowcroft, his office had been abandoned and he’d lost track of the man. It all happened over a decade ago and had been filed away in that place in Jack’s brain where he buried the memories he no longer wanted to interfere with his life.

And now it had resurfaced, and he was starting to tie together the two halves of the story he couldn’t figure out.

Driving for hours, he recounted that period of time in his life, trying to figure out why Meadowcroft would want Jack dead after all these years? Could he be the one who had put the hit out on Clarissa? On Johanna? All the other jobs Jack had taken after assuming Van de Berg’s identity? Van de Berg had been hunting Noble. Had Meadowcroft ordered that hit? If so, this went back quite a few years, at least.

Meadowcroft seemingly had unlimited resources a decade ago. Jack could only imagine how his wealth and power had expanded in the time since. With that came reach that might equal some of the largest nations. How else could he explain what happened in the early morning hours? It appeared Meadowcroft had his hands deep into someone’s pockets if the two men sent to kill him and Johanna were out of Langley.

Were they, though?

Two halves of a letter he thought he had pieced together, but he considered he might be wrong on this point. The possibility existed that Meadowcroft had his own team of elite operators. Operatives who could move in and out and do the dirty work that his network of for-hire hitmen weren’t equipped for. The two men could have been part of a rapid-action team that didn’t need days or weeks to prepare. Operating solely on brute force, they got in, got out, and even if they were detected, got away because Meadowcroft had the money to buy off anyone.

Thoughts jumbled together into a mass of congestion, rivaling the traffic around D.
