Shocklee waited for the call on several nights. Something had happened, but what? Shocklee had no way of knowing if Achmed had actually retrieved the $45,000 that he had stashed there during August of 1993. Did someone follow him? Was he in trouble? Could there be a problem that would force him to forget about the operation? He would simply have to wait and hope for a return call from Achmed.

No Peterson, and now, perhaps, no money. Is there anything else that can possibly go wrong?

The anxiety of waiting to hear from Achmed was taking a toll on Shocklee. He ate very little and stayed up late waiting for his phone to ring. Shit happens, and when it does, be prepared to back up and regroup. He instinctively knew that, but with Peterson backing out and the prospect of not having enough money to fund the operation, well, he was becoming just a bit less sure of himself.

Finally, almost seventy-two hours later, his phone rang, causing Shocklee to literally jump for the phone. For an ops officer who should have been more prepared for the unexpected, he was as nervous as a young teenager in a Texas whorehouse.

“In great shape,” replied Achmed.

“Good. Then that should take care of your requirements for the near term.”

“Yes, it will,” replied Achmed. “It will cover all of our requirements, the tools as well as the transportation requirements, and then some!”

“Outstanding,” replied Shocklee. “You have five weeks of school left. As soon as that is over, I think you should head home for the summer so that we can get ready to launch the building project. Have you made arrangements to communicate with your crew?”

“Oh yes,” was the reply from Achmed. “We have a very good line of communication. I plan to talk to them once a week until I return home in the middle of May, which was already my plan.”

“Achmed, you are doing a great job. We will need to meet for about two days before you get back with your crew. We need to work through the details of the next phase. Can you make plans to meet me in Nairobi on the third Monday of May? If so, make plans accordingly, take a room at the 680 Hotel, and wait for my call.”

“Yes, Mike, that should be no problem. We are ready, and the crew is anxious to take on one of the larger projects that I told them about. Goodbye for now.”

“Goodbye,” said Shocklee, as he hung up the phone. I
