There were three support staff and a cook; Miss Plesance was the nicest one. She had a hare lip and I put her empathy and understanding down to the fact that she herself had suffered somewhat because of this affliction. She at least behaved like a fellow human being; she had a witty sense of humour and occasionally a wicked twinkle in her eyes, she could play the piano and organised 'sing-songs', especially on birthdays. The cook, Miss Smith, was an elderly decent soul but we didn't see a great deal of her; we weren't allowed in her kitchen but she was always in the playroom to serve the lunch. The others were more of the Boagey ilk. I figured Miss Plesance would not stay long but I really hoped she would.
