CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Pete got on the phone as soon as he was alone in the car, his movements delicate and careful with his aching right arm and his leg beginning to feel sore as he performed a three-point turn so he could head back along the narrow street.

‘Guv, it’s Pete,’ he said when Colin answered. ‘We’ve got a situation and I can’t see how the Chief can say, “No,” to us this time.’

‘What is it?’

‘The suspect turned up at Dale Gordon’s place. We spooked him and he got away from us, but he went into the gardens behind the row of houses where Gordon lives. He knows which is theirs, but I don’t know if he’ll stick to his plan and go there or try to find some other way out. Which would mean going through someone’s house or coming out the way he went in. Dave’s found his car and he’s keeping an eye on it, but we don’t want him endangering a random member of the public, do we?’ As he spoke, he finished turning the car around and started back along towards the junction with Roberts Road.

‘Where are the Gordons?’

‘The kids are out and I took the mother to her mother’s. I’m on the way back to theirs now with a key, so I can make sure he hasn’t broken in while we’ve been gone. It’d be as good a way out of the gardens as any other, with the added bonus of scaring the Gordons while he’s at it, whether they’re in or not. Dick and Jane are on the way over, but four of us can’t search for him effectively. We need a drone up to contain the area.’

‘When did he go to ground?’

‘Ten…’ He checked the clock as he reached the bottom of Franklin Street and turned in. ‘Twelve minutes ago.’

‘So, he could be anywhere by now.’

‘Yes,’ Pete admitted, pulling up at the kerb a couple of doors down from the Gordons’ address. ‘But he’ll either have to go back to his car or abandon it and head away on foot. And before that, he’s got to get back out onto the street. And I can’t see him risking coming back out the way he went in, in case we’re watching for him.’

Colin paused for just a beat. ‘Leave it with me.’

The line went dead and Pete switched off the ignition and stepped out of the car. Looking up the street, he could see no pedestrians on the narrow pavements nor hear any alarms going off anywhere. That, at least, was a good sign.

He called Jane.

‘It’s Pete,’ he said when she answered. ‘Are you with Dick or on your own?’

‘We’re bringing both cars, just in case.’

‘OK. When you get here, go past the bottom end of Franklin and far enough around the bend to see up Roberts, then wait and see if the suspect shows.’

‘Right.’

Pete quickly described what the man was wearing. ‘Talk later.’ He ended the call and made another.

‘DC Feeney.’

‘Dick, it’s Pete. I need you to turn up Radford Road and into the top of Roberts.
