CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Pete got on the phone as soon as he was alone in the car, his movements delicate and careful with his aching right arm and his leg beginning to feel sore as he performed a three-point turn so he could head back along the narrow street.
âGuv, itâs Pete,â he said when Colin answered. âWeâve got a situation and I canât see how the Chief can say, âNo,â to us this time.â
âWhat is it?â
âThe suspect turned up at Dale Gordonâs place. We spooked him and he got away from us, but he went into the gardens behind the row of houses where Gordon lives. He knows which is theirs, but I donât know if heâll stick to his plan and go there or try to find some other way out. Which would mean going through someoneâs house or coming out the way he went in. Daveâs found his car and heâs keeping an eye on it, but we donât want him endangering a random member of the public, do we?â As he spoke, he finished turning the car around and started back along towards the junction with Roberts Road.
âWhere are the Gordons?â
âThe kids are out and I took the mother to her motherâs. Iâm on the way back to theirs now with a key, so I can make sure he hasnât broken in while weâve been gone. Itâd be as good a way out of the gardens as any other, with the added bonus of scaring the Gordons while heâs at it, whether theyâre in or not. Dick and Jane are on the way over, but four of us canât search for him effectively. We need a drone up to contain the area.â
âWhen did he go to ground?â
âTenâ¦â He checked the clock as he reached the bottom of Franklin Street and turned in. âTwelve minutes ago.â
âSo, he could be anywhere by now.â
âYes,â Pete admitted, pulling up at the kerb a couple of doors down from the Gordonsâ address. âBut heâll either have to go back to his car or abandon it and head away on foot. And before that, heâs got to get back out onto the street. And I canât see him risking coming back out the way he went in, in case weâre watching for him.â
Colin paused for just a beat. âLeave it with me.â
The line went dead and Pete switched off the ignition and stepped out of the car. Looking up the street, he could see no pedestrians on the narrow pavements nor hear any alarms going off anywhere. That, at least, was a good sign.
He called Jane.
âItâs Pete,â he said when she answered. âAre you with Dick or on your own?â
âWeâre bringing both cars, just in case.â
âOK. When you get here, go past the bottom end of Franklin and far enough around the bend to see up Roberts, then wait and see if the suspect shows.â
âRight.â
Pete quickly described what the man was wearing. âTalk later.â He ended the call and made another.
âDC Feeney.â
âDick, itâs Pete. I need you to turn up Radford Road and into the top of Roberts.
