Chapter Twenty-two

The Thursday morning Palm Beach Post had a surprise on the bottom of page one. Oscar spilled his coffee across his desk when he saw the article.

Timothy Bascomb had committed suicide.

NOTED ATTORNEY FOUND DEAD

APALACHICOLA, FL: One of the city’s most respected attorneys was found dead early Monday morning. Timothy Bascomb, son of the late Apalachicola Mayor Malcolm Bascomb, was discovered at his office, the victim of an apparent suicide. He was reportedly not suffering from depression and the reason for his action is at this time unknown.

The senior partner of Bascomb, Hughes, & Riner, Timothy Bascomb took over the firm after his father’s retirement and was largely responsible for its remarkable growth. His survivors include his wife of ten years, Catherine, and two children, Lisa and Matthew.

He read the article to Sydney, who had just wandered in from her room.

“There’s something wrong with this picture. Why would Bascomb kill himself? And look at the date. They found him while we were over there. I had talked to him the day before.”

“Coincidence. People kill themselves all the time. Especially lawyers, dentists and psychiatrists. High-pressure jobs. Maybe his wife was fooling around on him. Or just maybe he was afraid you were going to expose him. If he was in with that Walters guy then he would know that you have the goods on him.” She sat in the chair opposite him while he dabbed up the spill.

“Could be, I suppose. He was a society bigwig over there. Maybe the idea of public disgrace, disbarment, and prison was too much for him to face. I hate to think I was the cause of it. On the other hand I didn’t think they thought the situation was so far out of their control. These kinds of things can be tempered a lot. When you have the kind of power and money he had, a lot of things can be smoothed over. It just seems like an extreme response. I just wonder if it really was suicide or if he was in the way.”

“In the way of who?”

“Maybe Walters and his boys. Could be that Walters is trying to clean up the possible witness list if things fall apart.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I have to find this information he’s after—if it exists, and take it to the police. At the very least I can show that Roy wasn’t involved in Jack’s scheme if that’s what was going on. If it goes as far as trial I can use the information to cast some doubt on his guilt. I don’t know. Sometimes I feel like I’m raking leaves in the wind.”

He went into the gallery after first refilling his coffee and changing into dry pants. The street was quiet, as it usually was on Sunday mornings. There were only a few residences in the mostly commercial block. The buildings across the street were one story, a block-long row sharing an unbroken storefront. The gift shop and jewelry store would be open at noon.
