CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Spence stepped into his house, locking the front door behind him. Stifling a yawn, he walked into the living room after taking off his shoes and jacket. He’d had a long day. In the morning, he’d worked out and gone for a run with Stefon, then he’d spent most of his day running around sorting out minor disputes within the team.

Mostly, it was different factions of the crew growing annoyed over one reason or another and clashing. There was no violence, and Spence resolved everything without involving Natty, but it was still draining. He was glad he’d got his workout in beforehand, or he doubted he would have had the energy.

On top of the street stuff, Spence couldn’t shake his thoughts about Anika. She’d only messaged him once more since the last time, but Claudette’s words were still resonating. Resisting the urge to at least speak to her and have a proper conversation, was growing tougher.

‘Where’ve you been?’

Spence blinked. Deep in his thoughts, he hadn’t noticed Rosie standing in the middle of the room, with her arms folded. Her expression was mutinous, and without thinking, Spence straightened.

‘Hey, babe. I’ve been out working. What do you mean?’ He said distractedly.

‘I rang you twice and sent you a text. How come you weren’t replying?’ Rosie demanded. Spence grabbed his phone, glancing at the screen and seeing multiple notifications. He’d missed her calls by accident. It hadn’t occurred to him to check his phone in the past few hours, which was surprising.

Rosie reached out for his phone, but Spence pulled it out of her reach.

‘What are you doing?’

‘What are you doing?’ She replied. ‘Why are you being so funny about your phone?’ Her eyes narrowed.

Spence sighed. He didn’t want Rosie looking at his phone and seeing evidence Anika had contacted him. He hadn’t replied, but that didn’t matter. Rosie’s reaction surprised him, though. She had never made such a move before, and he needed to take control of the situation.

‘Let’s just take a deep breath and calm down,’ said Spence, still holding his phone. ‘I missed your calls, and I’m sorry. I haven’t checked it in a few hours, because I was dealing with some business. A lot of business. Thankfully, no one was shot at this time,’ he finished, trying to make a joke. Rosie didn’t look convinced.

‘Are you sure there’s nothing else going on?’

‘I’m sure,’ said Spence. ‘It’s been one of those days, and I’m a little drained. I was gonna order us some food and maybe curl up in front of the telly.’

Rosie surveyed Spence for a long moment, and then nodded.

‘What do you fancy eating?’

‘It’s up to you,’ said Spence, unlocking his phone and missing the suspicious look Rosie was giving him.
