Chapter Six

Black shut the door and was glad to be out of the house. Unfortunately, for him, CeCe seeing a doctor and acknowledging that she had depression issues had done nothing for her mood. She was still just as angry and irritable as she was before she went. His only joy in the house was his children, and his only relief was getting out of the house.

His first stop was The Grill. Prior to his taking it over, The Grill was a small restaurant near the beach that was popular with the tourists. When the previous owner ran low on cash, he turned to Jamaica for help, and Black told him to go ahead and give Mr. Henry whatever he needed. “In fact, make sure he has enough money to expand,” he told Jamaica. “I’m thinkin’ it needs to be big enough to add a band and a dance floor.” Once the renovations were complete, they pushed Mr. Henry out at gunpoint and Black took over.

Shortly after he arrived at his office, there was a knock at the door. “Come,” he shouted; and Vonetta Curtis, the club’s manager, came in. She was a Trinidadian who started working with Black the day he took over the spot. She has a beautiful face and a smile to match with a humble, aggressive, smart, and very driven attitude. Vonetta had just come to the island from her native Trinidad. She came to The Grill hoping to get a job as a waitress, until she could find some type of office work. Vonetta previously worked as an office manager for a real-estate company in San Fernando, Trinidad’s largest city; but after she talked Black, he had other ideas. “Since you have no experience as a waitress, Ms. Curtis, I don’t think that position is for you,” he told Vonetta.

“I understand,” Vonetta said and started to get up.

“Not so fast Ms. Curtis. I do have a position in mind for you.”

“What position would that be, Mr. Black?”

“Since you do have managerial experience, I would like to offer you the position of club manager.”

Naturally, she was shocked; but her next thought was that she knew nothing about managing a bar. Black told her that she knew how to manage people and processes, and she could learn the rest. Vonetta accepted and Black brought Lexi, who manages Cuisine, his club in New York, in to train her. It was a wise decision as Vonetta was an excellent manager and she absolutely loved her job.

“Good evening, Mike,” Vonetta said as she came through the door.

“Hello, Vonetta. How’s it going tonight?”

“Everything is going well now. But we had some problems with the meal vendor earlier today, but it was taken care of.”

“What was the problem?”

“He said that he would have to raise the prices we pay.”

“What did you tell him?”

“I causally reminded him of how many of our”—Vonetta paused—“let’s call them friends—are his customers, and how it would be a shame if all of them decided to do business with another vendor.
