9.The Upper Great Highway is dusted in a quite fine film of sand and the high, steep dunes block the view of Ocean Beach. The dunes are pocked with delicate, little red ice succulents, growing improbably there among the sand, its rootwork shallow. Here I learn to drive along this highway. The air is still—approachable and inviting. The sky—a simple and unbroken blue. Along this stretch of the highway is my favorite place as of late, the lone restaurant along this piece of the road, a restaurant with a big WPA mural on the ground floor and a second floor full of picture windows that look out onto the Pacific Ocean. I come here alone sometimes.

Here in the parking lot, Annette, my driving teacher, pops open the driver’s side door and I grip my passenger side handle, forever ambivalent about driving. Asiya, you can do a lot of things and you can do this, I tell myself. Most people drive and so can you. This is a highway at a finisterre, something I love.
