Some barter experts refer to cash conversion as âtrade liquidation.â
Several years ago, Chrysler traded a Spanish television network 192 cars for advertising. The network then turned around and sold the cars to their employees at a 30 percent discount over what the cars normally âstickeredâ for to their employees. The employees loved this, as they could not get this discount anywhere else! The average value of each car was $10,000. The television network received $1,920,000 (192 x $10,000) in real cash from the cash conversion. And what did it cost them? Unsold airtime, which cost them nothing (time that probably would have gone unused and thus would have produced zero revenue, but they were smart enough to trade it).
