CHAPTER ELEVEN

Tyler and Amahle stood, tense and unspeaking, as Ibrahim finally let out a long, croaking gasp and slumped against the ground. His eyes rolled back and turned dull, and he lay perfectly still.

Ty turned to his partner. “Who is She-Wolf?” He could guess, but he didn’t want to say it aloud.

Amahle didn’t respond right away. She stared at the young man’s corpse, and the expression on her face was something new. Ibrahim’s ugly end had already made her morose, it seemed, but now her mouth puckered while her shoulders rose a notch or two. She almost seemed faintly...ashamed?

And afraid. The young marksman’s final words had chilled her.

That all but confirmed Ty’s lurking suspicion. She-Wolf was the Ghost-Makers’ leader—and she was still alive. The rounds fired at her, the booby-trapped gun, and the tumble from the tree hadn’t killed the woman who was now Amahle’s deadly enemy.

The South African drew a deep breath and half-turned toward him, but her eyes remained downcast in her vague embarrassment. “You saved my life. My thanks for that, Tyler Katakura.”

“You’re welcome.” He spoke in a neutral but courteous tone. Americanized and cynical as he was, the traditional Japanese concern for politeness and decorum had never entirely abandoned him. “Don’t mention it.”

He realized, after a second, that he was speaking to himself in a way since it might be best not to mention his other conclusion. Amahle was mentally beating herself up over her failure to eliminate her former boss. Now She-Wolf would undoubtedly want revenge in addition to needing to complete the Ghost-Makers’ mission to earn their pay.

If he put Amahle on the spot—if he pressed her too hard on the issue and potentially made her feel as though she’d made a terrible mistake—it might impugn her effectiveness in scouting and combat. With the odds arrayed against them, the two of them would need to operate at the height of their abilities.

He swept aside the growing miasma of discomfort by trying to get her to focus on practical things. “We should get moving again. With all that shooting, if Hugh and Tilda are nearby, they probably got wind of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re picking up the pace and getting itchy. They might get away. Or they might do something stupid.”

His hands twisted tightly around the grip and barrel shroud of his rifle. He almost wished he hadn’t said that. The thought of the Ashcroft twins doing something to Daria in their impatience was nearly enough to impact his effectiveness.

“Yes,” Amahle agreed. “Come, let us go. Stay close to me. We must move faster than we had before. We need not worry so much about being quiet. Everyone nearby knows that we’re here.”

She shook her head one final time to clear her mind of dark thoughts, then hitched her rifle over her shoulder and strode out of the hollow to stand upon the ridge’s peak.

Ty sprang out, annoyed that she’d outpaced him the instant she started walking. His mind rapidly regained what it had learned about moving in the same style she used.
