“But…” Karissa was stumbling for what to say. “I have this. It’s cool, right?” She held up her wrist, showing us a sparkling pink watch with the “Dream Defenders” logo on it. Talia’s eyes went wide. Every nine-year-old loved that book series, even Talia. Her face instantly went from a mean frown to a kind smile.

“Yes, that watch is very cool. But it would look even cooler on me, don’t you think, Zoe?” said Talia. Karissa looked at me, confused. Talia crossed her arms and looked at me too. “A real friend would give me nice things. Are we real friends?”

I felt like my heart was playing tug-of-war. I wanted to say no to Talia and let this poor new girl walk away. But another part of me knew that Talia was quickly becoming the most popular girl in school, and if I didn’t do what she said I’d get left in the dust, and then nobody would like me. Talia always said being popular was the most important thing in the world. And I couldn’t say no to her. I wasn’t brave enough to do that.

“You should…give her the watch,” I said, although my throat was so dry that it sounded more like a croak. Karissa put her hand behind her back and shook her head. I could feel Talia watching me. If I didn’t get that watch from Karissa, Talia might hurt her. I’d seen her hit other kids when they didn’t do what she said. Really, making her give the watch was the kind thing to do, because I’d be saving her from a beating. I held out my hand. “If you don’t give me the watch, um…” I thought of some way to convince her. “I’ll tell everyone that you’re crazy. Then no one will play with you, ever. You don’t want…um…” I scrambled to come up with a threat that could work. “You don’t want to be called Crazy Karissa, do you?”

As Karissa’s eyes filled with tears and she slowly took off her watch, I felt like a part of me was dying. She held out the watch to me, but Talia grabbed it from her hand. “Thank you for the watch, Crazy Karissa,” said Talia, as she put the watch on her wrist.

“B-but…” Karissa sputtered, “you said you wouldn’t call me crazy if I gave it to you.”

“No, Zoe said that. I’ll call you whatever I want, Crazy Karissa.”

Karissa turned and ran. I could hear her crying all the way past the monkey bars. Talia smiled at her new watch and went back to climbing the tree. I told her I needed to go to the bathroom because I wasn’t feeling good, which was true. As soon as I got to the toilet, I barfed twice and then spent the rest of lunchtime sobbing uncontrollably.
