âButâ¦â Karissa was stumbling for what to say. âI have this. Itâs cool, right?â She held up her wrist, showing us a sparkling pink watch with the âDream Defendersâ logo on it. Taliaâs eyes went wide. Every nine-year-old loved that book series, even Talia. Her face instantly went from a mean frown to a kind smile.
âYes, that watch is very cool. But it would look even cooler on me, donât you think, Zoe?â said Talia. Karissa looked at me, confused. Talia crossed her arms and looked at me too. âA real friend would give me nice things. Are we real friends?â
I felt like my heart was playing tug-of-war. I wanted to say no to Talia and let this poor new girl walk away. But another part of me knew that Talia was quickly becoming the most popular girl in school, and if I didnât do what she said Iâd get left in the dust, and then nobody would like me. Talia always said being popular was the most important thing in the world. And I couldnât say no to her. I wasnât brave enough to do that.
âYou shouldâ¦give her the watch,â I said, although my throat was so dry that it sounded more like a croak. Karissa put her hand behind her back and shook her head. I could feel Talia watching me. If I didnât get that watch from Karissa, Talia might hurt her. Iâd seen her hit other kids when they didnât do what she said. Really, making her give the watch was the kind thing to do, because Iâd be saving her from a beating. I held out my hand. âIf you donât give me the watch, umâ¦â I thought of some way to convince her. âIâll tell everyone that youâre crazy. Then no one will play with you, ever. You donât wantâ¦umâ¦â I scrambled to come up with a threat that could work. âYou donât want to be called Crazy Karissa, do you?â
As Karissaâs eyes filled with tears and she slowly took off her watch, I felt like a part of me was dying. She held out the watch to me, but Talia grabbed it from her hand. âThank you for the watch, Crazy Karissa,â said Talia, as she put the watch on her wrist.
âB-butâ¦â Karissa sputtered, âyou said you wouldnât call me crazy if I gave it to you.â
âNo, Zoe said that. Iâll call you whatever I want, Crazy Karissa.â
Karissa turned and ran. I could hear her crying all the way past the monkey bars. Talia smiled at her new watch and went back to climbing the tree. I told her I needed to go to the bathroom because I wasnât feeling good, which was true. As soon as I got to the toilet, I barfed twice and then spent the rest of lunchtime sobbing uncontrollably.
