Out of breath, she sputtered, “Claire . . . Claire . . . Claire.”

“What about Claire? Is she okay?” I asked.

“Yes. She’s. Okay. But. Allergic.” She took breaths between each word.

“Just catch your breath, Em,” I said, barely able to be patient and wait.

“Claire just had an allergy attack. She’s up at the nurse,” she finally said.

“Oh, no! Is she going to be okay?” I asked.

“Yeah. Yeah. Not life threatening or anything. Just swelling and itchiness,” she explained.

“Thank goodness. That’s so scary!” I said.

“I know. But, Nina, she’s not going to be able to do her event,” Emily said.

“Oh, no! Poor Claire. Who can do it? You?” I asked.

Emily shook her head. “I can’t because I already have a waterfront event.”

“What’s her event, anyway?” I asked.

“She was supposed to hop in a kayak, row out to the island in the middle of the lake, make a sandcastle, and then row back,” Emily explained.

“Okay, so who can we get to do it? Did you ask the captains? Does it have to be a Blue Jay?” I asked.

“I asked Margaret, and she said the rules say it has to be a Blue Jay who hasn’t done a waterfront event yet,” she said.

“Who does that leave?”

Emily tilted her head the way our dog does when we tell him something and he’s trying to figure out what we mean. “Um, Nina . . .” she began.

I knew what was coming. “I can’t be the only one who could take her place. No way.”

“You are.” Emily went through the list of Blue Jay names and their events.

“Not me. I don’t even think I could do it. No way. You know that I’m scared of the water. I hate it!” I was freaking out. “And that island is all the way out in the middle of nowhere. Why does it have to be someone who hasn’t done a waterfront event?”

“How should I know?” Emily replied. “It’s the rules. You gotta do it. And you gotta come now.”
