CHAPTER 5

The moon shone high in the dark sky, casting its ethereal light through the window of Dane’s room. He stared at the perfectly round moon, unable to look away from it. His body was on hyper-alert, ready to shift at a moment’s notice, and he willed it not to. He wouldn’t be able to control himself if he shifted into his wolf self.

Doing so would surely cause him to behave like a rutting beast and push himself upon the woman sleeping down the hall. His instincts would kick into high gear; her scent would flood his senses and he would have no choice. He’d have to claim her, have to make her his. With a growl he rolled onto his side and punched the 29

pillow beneath his head in frustration. The wound on his calf ached, but not as mightily as the ache between his legs. He’d jerked off once to the vision of Amanda in his mind and already his dick was hard again.

The woman was going to drive him insane with lust, he just knew it.

His entire body pulled taut with restraint, and he rubbed the back of his neck, desperate to howl in frustration. What would it hurt to shift, just for a few minutes? He could prowl the perimeters of Amanda’s property, make sure no one from the rogue pack was lurking around. He had no idea if they knew where he’d ended up, but he didn’t want to take any chances.

It might not be smart to go outside and leave his scent to linger long after he came inside, but he knew he’d feel safer if he at least checked things out, made sure everything was okay. Dane climbed out of bed already naked and snuck through the house. He opened the back door quietly, shut it with a soft click, and crouched on the back porch, settling himself onto his hands and knees.

Within seconds, his muscles stretched and he threw back his head, hair springing over his entire body. He’d been holding it back so strongly he shifted with ease, as if his body needed to acquire his wolf form. He felt better already. A quiet yip escaped him and he trotted out into the back field, his steps hindered by his injury. The bandage had torn off when he shifted and he had no idea how he was going to explain that one to Amanda.

He couldn’t worry about it now. He had other important things to concentrate on, like making sure Amanda was safe. The night came alive to his sensitive ears. Bugs chirped loudly, frogs bellowed and burped, and an owl screeched in the distance. All of the sounds familiar, warming his blood, making him feel at home.

His pack lived miles away and he wished he could go home. If circumstances were different, if his leg were better, if his returning wouldn’t put the rest of his pack at risk, he’d be there tonight. He couldn’t risk the long travel, though, especially with the rogue pack lurking around, looking for him.
