“I don’t want there to be another child. Do you understand what I’m saying? I can’t go through that again.”

He watched her closely, trying to gauge her reaction. He felt the loss when she pulled back.

“I understand how you must feel, but…” she trailed off.

He nodded, knowing she would leave him now. Seeing his cowardice for what it was.

She licked her lips. “I’m scared of saying the wrong thing,” she began, then was silent for long moments.

He waited, giving her time.

“I want you, Peter. And one day I want to bear your children. I’d be lying if I said otherwise, and I want to be honest with you as well.”

Again, she leaned forward to cup his face, her eyes searching. “Are you dead set on this?”

“I want you to be happy, Celine. But I don’t know that I can handle the possibility of losing another child.”

Her fingers stroked the side of his face. He reached for her hand and brought it to his lips. Would he lose her now?

“I love you, Peter. I know your fears. It would be foolish for me to say I understand what you went through, because I haven’t lost a child.

This isn’t something we need to decide today. I want to be with you. If that means no children, then it does. It’s you I want; you I need. But I’ve tried to go on for seven years without you, and I don’t want to do it any longer.”

“I know, because I feel the same. But before we go any further I wanted you to understand. You can still walk away.”

“I do understand. That’s everything. Right? No more secrets?”

“No more secrets,” he confirmed.

“I’m not going anywhere. Living without you has been hell and I won’t wait another second. No more words,” she whispered as she drew him close again, her lips claiming his. They were soft and her 46
