Chapter Two

I should be dead. A thousand times over. A trillion times over. Should be dead, but I was still alive.

I would’ve died had it not been for Samantha. She’d drastically reduced the Landers’ power when she’d smashed through one of their biggest soldiers. How she’d done it… I had no clue. She had a particularly pure and old Peacekeeper, but for someone to reach down and claim that level of power, they needed talent.

If we had that as a guardian, we could achieve so much more, protect so many more, and keep the multiverse safe. But if there was one thing they teach you in the guardians, it’s that you concentrate on your current mission. You can think big later. When you are faced with an immediate problem, you think small. And you take every step you need to fix it.

I’d taken mine.

I’d destroyed the current root of the infection. It meant that the Landers couldn’t come through again. Yet.

But they were already here in force.

I’d previously spoken of two other incidents where we’d lost universes to the Landers. While they had of course taken each successful invasion seriously, they hadn’t been there in the numbers they were invading this universe with. Which meant what? Why would they want this place? They… weren’t going to make this universe their new base, were they?

A chilling thought. An impossible one, right? The guardians would find out, and they would go on the attack, driving them out.

But there was a problem with that thought. They would have to be contacted first. If the Landers managed to silently overcome this universe and hide within it, the guardians might never know.

The Landers would become commensurately more powerful, and the fight would continue afresh.

If the Landers won here.

I was on the run, had been on the run for what felt like days, but it couldn’t be more than hours. Then again, who cared about time? Who required an irrelevant metric like that when the only thing that mattered was surviving? And fighting nonstop.

A sprite appeared behind me. I elbowed it out of the way, a pulse of power from my armor and Peacekeeper disengaging its lock with the Landers’ energy.

I ripped it right out of existence a few seconds later. But my grip was starting to weaken. So was my resolve.

I kept thinking of how significant this could be. I needed help. And until and unless Samantha came back, I wouldn’t get it.

Ever since Samantha disappeared, I’d sensed a change in the Landers. A change in Beliza One, too.

The Nightswept was concentrating in different places, getting ready, no doubt, for a full-scale attack on this universe. But to do that, it had to pull back resources from the planet.

The further afield I ran from the primary infection site, the more Beliza One solidified.

As I ran across the top of a snow drift now, I encountered a valley that was relatively untouched. The pall of Nightswept still absorbed the horizon above, but the snow itself
