Story Line: Someone who faces a great challenge comes close to destruction, rallies, but in the end is overcome.

Key Symbols:

ON DUTY, ON PATROL: Doing one’s duty, fulfilling one’s role.

BROKEN BRAKE LIGHT: What needs repair; a signal that something needs to be fixed.

GETTING SHOT: Can be an actual warning, or a metaphor about stress that leads to change.

A VALIANT FIGHT: Dreamer’s true intentions; how she sees role, her profession.

IN PURSUIT, ALTHOUGH SHOT: Overcoming the odds, doing what one must, no matter what.

DEATH DUE TO COMPLICATIONS: Death is a symbol of change; death due to complications hints at a change that happens for related reasons, like a side effect.

Major Life Issues, in Dreamer’s Own Words: “Not sure about my career choice. I wonder if the pressure and negative parts of the job are more than I can handle. Do these dreams predict I will get shot and die?”

Analysis, Addressed to the Dreamer: The dream suggests that on the job, you rise to the occasion and do well. The end of a dream often points to the answer. In this ending, you die; death often relates to a major change. Since you are in your mid-twenties when you die, the ending implies you will stay at the police force at least until your mid-twenties. After that, whether by choice or due to injury or another reason, the dream hints that you may change careers.

The nightmare has elements of a true warning: it repeats, there are intense emotions, true-to-life details, and appropriate actions and reactions by characters. So there is a possibility that the dream predicts you may encounter a confrontation of that nature, a traffic stop or a service call that first appears routine, yet unfolds into something serious that leads to injuries. With this recurring dream, it may be wise to at least consider another profession by age twenty-five.

Some may suggest it could be your fate to die young, as a true warning. However, having a warning dream does not mean the depicted fate is set in stone. Warning dreams show what can happen—if . . . and only if—you continue on your present path. If you are vigilant on the job or take a desk job, or change careers, the outcome can change.

As an extra consideration, here is a pop psychology thought. If you have to ask whether police work is right for you, you may have answered your own question. When something feels right, there is no need to ask. On the other hand, sometimes you grow into a challenging life path over time, so you are the only one who can answer that question. Sometimes only you, the dreamer, can fathom the truth—whether the message is a whisper about an actual date with danger, or mirrors an emotional tug-of-war about being a good police officer in a world that does not always appreciate your efforts.
