Chapter Ten

‘Oh, fiddlesticks,’ said Mrs Trotter, recognising the telltale hiss of escaping air. ‘What a time to have a puncture. And here’s me thinking how clever I was to have taken the short cut to the village by cycling over Trowser’s Down. Now we’re stuck in the middle of nowhere! Oh dear, Toby, what are we going to do?’

Then she spotted a dark smudge on the horizon. And, as the smudge drew nearer, she thought, ‘Well, that is a stroke of luck. I didn’t expect to see another vehicle up here!’

Admittedly, the vehicle was being driven in a rather erratic manner, swerving wildly from one side of the road to the other. And there did appear to be some sort of chaotic event taking place inside it, involving lots of barking, shouting and terrified screaming.

But, as Mrs Trotter said to Toby as she stepped into the middle of the road, ‘Ah well, any port in a storm!’ And she began to flag down the very rusty old black van.
