Chapter Fourteen

Dan and Tammi had worked straight through without taking a break to fix the engine on the Lady Anne. It was one of those jobs that you could not leave half completed when your boat was moored on water. The salt in the sea air could cause even further damage if the plates were removed and left off for any length of time.

Dan thanked God for the dexterity of Tammi’s dainty fingers. Dan had often been of the opinion that manufacturers purposely made engine parts inaccessible so that you had to either buy a replacement or pay a fortune to a specialist shop whenever anything went wrong. But Tammi had an amazing knack for manoeuvring her arms and fingers into the tiniest, most cramped and awkward to get at spaces, and still manage to slip a wrench or spanner in with her to loosen or tighten cogs and nuts, whichever the instance demanded.

By 6pm that evening, both of them were exhausted and covered in oil, grease, and dirt. Dan had worn surgical gloves once the dirty work had started because he hated getting grime under his fingernails, and worse still, the fact that he never seemed to be able to fully extricate it no matter how hard he scrubbed. Tammi, on the other hand, said she could not feel her way around the insides of the engine without being able to rely on her sense of touch, especially in the parts which were out of sight once she’d snaked her arm in.

Tammi hit the showers first. She had received a text from Geraldine asking if she was free to hook up, so she had arranged to meet her in town at seven. Dan wasn’t expected at Caitlin’s until eight, so he had more time to play with.

Before she left for her date, Tammi asked, “Do yer think yer might be out all night at Caitlin’s?”

Dan shrugged. “I hope so, but I don’t want to take anything for granted.” The huge grin on his face told Tammi he was more than a little confident that he would in fact be invited to stay over.

“It’s just that I was hoping to bring Gerri back here again, if it’s okay?”

“Sure,” said Dan. “You two are really hitting it off then I take it?”

Tammi smiled. “Aye, she’s a bonnie lass right enough, but I know not to get too involved; she is only seeing me on the side.”

Dan could tell by her expression and the timbre of her voice that Tammi felt more for Gerri than she knew the other girl was willing to offer. But at least he thought Tammi would keep her guard up, knowing the situation from the outset.

While Tammi was attending to the finishes touches in the mirror, she called back. “What will you do if Caitlin kicks you out? Head back to Maggie’s?” There was a smirk behind her question, which Dan thought cheeky, but typical Tammi.

“No, what kind of swine do you take me for?” He could not help but laugh at her innuendo.
