CHAPTER SIX

EVAN stood aggressively in the centre of the room with his

large hands on his hips. 'They could be hiding the truth from us!

Doctors never tell you what they really think.' His skin was

flushed, his eyes filled with anger and anxiety. 'Why didn't she

tell me? Why spring it on me suddenly like that? Catherine

knew, you knew. What am I²some sort of ogre?'

'If you bellowed at her like this, yes!' Lisa told him, keeping her

eyes on his taut face. 'The last thing Anna needs just now is an

irate husband. It isn't her fault that this has happened. Poor girl,

she needs to be cherished, not bullied.' 'Bullied?' Evan's voice

roared. 'Me?' 'Yes, you,' she mocked him, half smiling, amusedly

his look of indignant amazement. 'I've never bullied Anna in my

life,' he protested. Lisa laughed outright. 'You don't know when

you're doing it.'

'Look,' he said in that belligerent, bull-like way, I've turned

over every stone I knew to keep her happy. God knows how

patient I've been. I'd have chucked Jon out on his ear long ago if

it hadn't been for Anna.' He paused, his ears reddening. 'I love

her,' he muttered in a low, furious voice, then shot Lisa a look

daring her to comment or even to admit having heard that.

Gently she said: 'You mustn't worry too much. I don't think

there's any real risk to the baby. Anna's been overdoing it, that's

all. If she rests and gets lots of peace and quiet, things will

proceed normally again. She's a healthy woman. It will be fine,

Evan.'

'I hope to God it is,' he muttered, moving to the window and

staring out with every muscle in his thick neck clotting in

tension. T couldn't stand it if anything happened to her.'

'It won't.'

'I wish I had your confidence.'

'These things happen, Evan. It will right itself.'

'I wanted a girl,' he said heavily. 'Now all I want is Anna safe

and sound.'

There was a silence. Lisa moved over to touch his sleeve, her

face uncertain. She did not say anything. After a moment Evan

turned and gave her a grim smile.

'Anyway, about this party!' Her face altered. Warily, she asked:

'Yes? What about it?'

'I want you to be very nice to Crawford. You were a bit

standoffish with him when he had dinner at my house. I'm not

asking you to abandon any -principles, but I can't rely on Jon to

keep the man on the line. You'll have to do it. A few smiles don't

cost much.'

'I'm a secretary,' she retorted, 'nothing more. The pay isn't good

enough for that.'

Evan thought that was very funny. He roared, the grim lines of

his face breaking up, and she was quite relieved to see the

wicked glint in those yellow eyes.

'Just be nice,' he said as he rolled out of the room.

still chuckling. Lisa sat down behind her desk and stared at the

door. Jon had been as shaken as Evan to hear of his sister's

problem with the baby. He had, of course, reacted in a very

different way, without any of Evan's furious anxiety. Jon had

merely looked pale and hag-ridden²Evan-ridden, she corrected,

smiling. Typically, Evan had turned on Jon as the only cause of

Anna's situation.
