Love and Egoism

Almost all of Nietzsche’s ideas about love must be updated and adapted to the new reality of similarity between the sexes, at least in those societies where women are not suppressed and controlled in the name of God. I am therefore going to skip his observations about the differences in love between the sexes, and bring only his insight into the nature of love itself. Nietzsche the Overturner showed that love, unlike the stereotype of ultimate selflessness, is actually based on selfishness, possessiveness, and self-deception. Probing love and sympathy as manifested by women, he asked, “And if they sacrifice themselves, their honor, their reputation, to whom do they sacrifice themselves? To the man? Or is it not rather to an unbridled urge?” We should add that similar “unbridled urges” obviously operate in men too. Ultimately, what we desire, even if it pleases others and gains their gratitude, is no more than our own egoistic selfish desire (Will, III, 777). When in love, we simply deceive ourselves by editing our picture of the past to suit our vanity, believing that such “self-oblivion in love,” and “absorption of the ego in the other person” never happened before (Human, Assorted, 37).
