It was almost seven o’clock that evening when I walked back across Amnicola and into the PD. Janet and Ann had gone home, but fortunately Hawk was still there. Jack was at his desk sifting through Nicolette’s computer. I asked if he’d had any luck. He said he had and that there were half a dozen naked pictures of her that she’d texted to McGee’s phone the day she disappeared.

“I don’t know that they are actually her. They’re just body shots, very suggestive, but no head. Very little in the backgrounds. Funny thing is, it’s not like her; it seems out of character, to me anyway. In all of her other emails and postings on social media, there’s not so much as a single cuss word, let alone this kind of thing, but I’m still making my preliminary search. I’ll get in deeper as I go, but it’ll take time.”

“Good job,” I said. “And you’re right. They’re not just suggestive, they’re gross. Anyway, we’ll talk about it when we get back,” I said. “Hawk, you’re with me.”

Jack looked up and said, “You guys are going for drinks… without me?”

“Yeah, you can’t come with us,” Hawk teased. “They don’t have booster seats where we’re going, Jackie boy. You’re out of luck.”

Jack clicked his tongue and pointed at Hawk while shaking his head, unable to hide the smirk on his lips. It wasn’t that Jack was short, he wasn’t. It was just Hawk’s way of telling him he’d been accepted and was now one of the team, and that since they were the two men in my team, there had to be some traditional ball busting between them. I was glad to see it. After all everyone had been through over the loss of our friend Lennie, it was a relief that Jack had finally been able to fit in.

“How do you want to play this, Captain?” Hawk asked as he drove in the direction of the Tomahawk Trailer Park.

“We’re going to find him, grab him, and take him in. No more, no less.”

Well, that was my plan, but you know what they say about plans and mice and men, right?

I knocked on McGee’s door, hoping he’d done as I asked and stayed away. He had, and so apparently had Harvel Brady. No one came to the door, and I couldn’t hear anyone moving around inside.

I knocked again. “Police. Open the door.” Nothing.

I looked at Hawk. He shrugged. I reached for the door handle and turned it. It was unlocked. I opened the door and yelled, “Police. Don’t move. We’re coming in.” No answer.

I stepped inside, weapon in hand. Hawk followed and we proceeded to clear the trailer room by room. The place was empty. Brady wasn’t there.

“Now what,” Hawk said, holstering his weapon.

“We’ll try the Clover Bar,” I replied. “It’s on Rossville Boulevard; not far.”

“I know the place,” Hawk said as we got back in the car. “It’s a real dump. How they keep their licenses is beyond me. You know what this dude looks like?”

“Only from his mug shot.
