Two days after her discussion with Nadia, Nfudu realized her period was late. At first, she made nothing of it since she was pretty irregular. However, she did not fathom all the other symptoms she was experiencing – headaches, missing heartbeats and an occasional feeling of nausea. She went to see her family doctor right away as she couldn’t wait to rule out any distressing possibilities.

“You’re pregnant,” announced the doctor after Nfudu had waited almost an hour to get the results of her blood test.

Nfudu felt the blood drain from her veins. “Pregnant? I was being very cautious. Wait…”

“From what I see,” continued the doctor, “You’re three weeks along.”

“No way!” exclaimed Nfudu. “I couldn’t be pregnant. First of all, I have two shop openings to worry about, and I’m not married. This cannot be.”

“An unexpected pregnancy,” nodded the doctor as he took notes on his pad.

“Yes, and I’m really disappointed in myself,” Nfudu responded, nodding in return.

“You don’t need to panic. There are a number of routes you can take. I’d like to review them with you and the father of the baby. Who is the father?”

“The father?” Nfudu asked darting her eyes across the room.

“Yes.”

“Did you say I was three weeks along?”

“Yes …give or take a few days.”

Nfudu knew this could only mean one thing – she could not be certain who between Ikechi and Javier was the father of her baby. This jolted her beyond imagination. When she looked up from the examination table, she saw the doctor looking expectantly at her. “You look like you just saw a ghost. Are you all right?”

“I’m not sure who the father is. It could be either my fiancé or this guy, who I met recently… It’s a long story. I’m at a loss for words.” She confessed in a sullen tone, shaking her head persistently.

“That complicates matters. Don’t you think? Try to recall which of the two men is more likely than the other to be the father.”

“I was intimate with both of them one day apart, about three weeks ago, so I couldn’t say for sure. Is there any way of confirming which one of them it could be? I’ve heard of DNA testing in the United States. Does it really work?”

The doctor shook his head. “No. Not with fetal testing. DNA is still being experimented with. It will take a little while to be fully developed. I’ll refer you to a gynecologist to help answer all your questions. She will also care for you and the baby should you decide to keep it.”

“Should I decide? No…,” protested Nfudu shaking her head. She would never consider aborting her baby. No matter how difficult her circumstances turned out to be, it wasn’t a choice she could ever make.

From the doctor’s office, she went straight to her flat, laid on her bed and cried the rest of the afternoon. She felt lethargic when she woke up and needed desperately to speak to someone but was too embarrassed to reach out to anyone.
