Magic surged through me, and that was all the warning I got before the world flipped around me, as I desperately tried to use the hover boots’ brakes to stop myself being flung twenty feet into the air. The blast had thrown everyone else back, too, but the overwhelming presence of the kimaros, and Veyak, muted all sound and feeling but numb shock.

Someone had created a magic-based explosion on the other side of the void. I knew that sensation. I’d felt it before when I’d handled magic-based explosives, but never like this. The whole world had shaken. More than one world. The swamp was gone, as was the jungle, to be replaced by a bird’s-eye-view of a city.

Klathica. They’d somehow tapped into the doorway and shut off the link to Cethrax—by setting off a bomb, right at the kimaros. And… and it looked like it worked. The sky lit up again. Thunderbolts struck the ground. Veyak was pissed. Oh, shit. I steadied myself, using the hover boots for balance. There were bodies on the ground. Humans and monsters. Some stirring, some not.

I kicked up the hover boots and moving to the nearest body. Iriel. She’d pushed herself half-upright.

“What—?”

“The god’s angry. We need to get off this world.” But I wouldn’t trust Klathica, either. What the hell were they thinking, blowing up a freaking kimaros? Where was Kay? Aktha’s magic had altered the earth, and there were patches of burned ground everywhere Veyak had struck. And bodies. Please don’t let them all be dead—

Another blast of lightning shook the earth. Now Cethrax’s army had gone, the god had only one target—us.

My gaze snagged on an unmoving body amongst the debris. No. Please, no.

“Kay!”

Nothing. His hands were burned red, a sign of third level magic, and when I lifted his right palm, there was no pulse.

“Shit. No. Kay. Wake up.”

Panic clawed up my throat. Panic, and rage, and other things I couldn’t confront right now. My hands tingled with magic, like a second pulse in itself.

Magic. The gods.

I reached beyond the lingering presence of Veyak, reached for the other I knew was there, though dampened.

Xanet answered.

The shock vibrated through my bones as my hand gripped Kay’s wrist and the other pressed to the earth. Xanet’s power, amplified, shot through the sky and earth, which trembled again.

Aktha’s presence pushed against Xanet.

I was Xanet. I saw through the god’s eyes, the terror of the torn-up earth, the world ruined by the monsters from the void. I couldn’t feel my earthly body, just the pulse of life through the earth, through this world.

We can stop this, thought the part of me that wasn’t in shock. We’re here to stop this. We can end it. Help me.

The pulse beat through me, through everything, healing all the damage it could reach. Holes in the earth sealed. The soothing presence pushed Veyak’s wrath aside, and in my own body—

In my hand, a pulse thrummed to life against my fingertips. I gasped as Kay’s hand twitched, and I swore my own heart stopped beating.
