Seven years later, an itch—

full of regret, sorry he had not

made copies of the originals, he paid

four copper coins to have her

dug back up. The two scruff-bearded

men with shovels were amazed

they had not been asked to recover

a family emerald or gold ring,

but instead were requested to

bring back only fusty papers.

And while digging, they surprised

themselves by unearthing thoughts

of their own wives, their long marriages.

One man began to hum a hymn

without knowing why; the other raised

his chin and barked at the sky.

It began to rain hard in London.

Rossetti stood by the fogging window

and watched the wet street

for the men’s return. Despite

the storm, it was a good day

for those who had been parted.

While all know the lesson

that life must go on, a few had learned

so will love, and, others

had learned, so must art.
