The storm never brought any snow, but the temperature plummeted into the twenties, making the next morning so cold, I didn’t want to emerge from my comforter.

Once I was up and around, Mama asked me to take her into town to do a little shopping. Since I had to work, she and Derek decided he’d pick her up in front of my office at noon. I introduced her to Harold, then we went over to Debbie’s Deliciousness so my mom could meet her and Carla.

When I’d married Tommy, I really didn’t have any friends of my own. The ceremony had consisted of my parents and some of Tommy’s buddies from high school and their wives. It wasn’t until after Tommy left me that I developed real relationships.

Debbie’s place was a little busier, but not much. The bakery had once been a hub of activity in the morning, but I counted six other customers besides us. Debbie’s face lit up when she saw us and she stuck her head in the back. Carla emerged seconds later, and they both rounded the counter with huge grins.

“This is your mom!” Debbie exclaimed with certainty as she took Mama into an embrace. “I can see the resemblance.”

“You said she wasn’t coming for Christmas!” Carla said, lining up for a hug.

“Mama, these are my two best friends,” I said. “That’s Debbie, and this is Carla.”

“It’s so nice to meet you two!” my mom said. “I’m assuming this is your store, Debbie?”

“Yes, it is. Carla here helps me manage it. Best partner I could ever have.”

“That’s wonderful,” Mama said, glancing around. “This is such a warm, homey place. It’s smells delicious. Is that nutmeg? Maybe some cinnamon?”

“Yes, it is. Let’s sit you down and you can sample the goods!” Carla said, linking arms with my mom and guiding her to our favorite table tucked in the corner.

Debbie rushed back around the display counter and emerged a few moments later with a tray of assorted goodies. She set them on the table, then rushed back for coffees.

“These look amazing,” Mama crooned.

“The ones with the pink flags are sugar free,” Carla said. “They’re really popular.”

“Those are what I like,” I said, grabbing a strawberry filled donut.

“We’re trying to figure out how we can sell them beyond the store,” Carla said. “I’m working out the details.”

“I want confectionary world dominance,” Debbie stated, setting down our drinks. “And also sugar-free supremacy.”

“Let’s start with Northern California first,” Carla said, rolling her eyes. “Then we can branch out slowly until you rule the donut world.”

“Well, I think you ladies will achieve that,” my mom said with a groan as she took a second bite. “Debbie, these taste like angels made them and dropped them directly from heaven.”

“Well, thank you,” my friend said softly. “I really appreciate that.”

Mama asked a ton of questions about their lives and both were open books. Carla told her all about her marriage to Mac, their fabulous honeymoon cruise they’d taken earlier in the year, and she surprised even me when she said they were going to try to have some kids.
