“What can I get you, Miss Tooth Fairy?” asked the dentist, coming out of her office. As a dentist in the fairy world, she was always busy, but never too busy for the Tooth Fairy. “A nice glass of mouthwash? Some tiny tubes of toothpaste? Would you like to look at our X-rays?”

Lucy smiled. “Thank you so much, Irma. Maybe in a little while. I just needed a break, so I thought I’d come in for a professional floss.” She settled into the exam chair right next to Oona.

Oona’s eyes widened. This was definitely an opportunity, but what should she do?

Irma clipped a bib around Lucy’s neck. “I’ll do it myself,” she said. “Now tell me what’s going on. You look exhausted.”

“Well, for starters, someone’s been following me.”

Irma paused from adjusting her little spotlight. “What? No! You should call the authorities.”

Oh, dear. Oona tried to shrink down into the exam chair.

“No. It’s nothing I can’t handle. She’s just a Newbie.”

Irma nodded. “Of course. It’s the price you pay for your fabulousness.”

Lucy ignored the compliment. “Anyway, the real problem is one of the children on my route. I’m not sure what to do. He is so accident-prone. It seems like every day he falls or bangs his head. He’s knocked out three teeth in a month! It’s just awful collecting teeth that aren’t ripe yet.”

Irma shook her head. “Believe me, I know. What are you going to do?”

“I’m not sure,” Lucy said. “I wish I could protect him so he’d keep his teeth in his head until they were ready, but I’m not sure how.”

“Maybe some fluoride would help him?” suggested Irma. Then she said, “Open wide,” and started flossing.

“Hat’s a hossihility,” said Lucy, but she didn’t sound convinced.

Meanwhile, Oona’s heart was thumping out of her chest. She had finally found a way she could truly help Lucy! But she was so nervous, she was having trouble finding her voice. Plus, her mouth was full of dental floss.

Her hygienist must have been reading her mind. “Oona, weren’t you just telling me that’s what your special underwear does?” she said, tugging the floss out from between Oona’s incisors.

Oona popped upright in the chair and turned to Lucy. “I was! It can! It does! Lucy, I think I can help you with this little boy.”

Lucy’s eyebrows crowded together when she saw Oona next to her. Then she closed her eyes. She looked very tired. All the more reason for Oona to help her!

“Hehwoh, Ooha,” said Lucy. Oona was going to correct her on the name again, but then she realized it was because the dentist’s fingers were making it hard for Lucy to talk. This was her chance.

“My magic underwear will help him pay attention and stay safe with my patented wedgie magic.”

Now Lucy sat up and rinsed. She turned to the dentist. “Thank you, Irma. I feel like a new fairy.” She looked at Oona like you might look at a strange vegetable you weren’t sure you wanted to eat. “Did you follow me here?”

“What? No! This is my weekly appointment.
