It was a full turn of the wheel after they met before Zijian did any killing for Ysobel.

Zijian did return, as the girl had telepathically requested, after the dinner party at the Khan estate. She was intrigued by the girl’s ability. No one except Hadra had ever spoken into her mind.

Turned out Little Ysobel wanted her to kill someone on OmniCorp’s board. She said he was corrupt. A sexual abuser. She wasn’t completely clear on his crimes. But she had heard terrible things about him from some of the women at the company. “He was a bad man,” she said. “He deserved to die.”

Zijian refused, explaining that there wasn’t a Lotus protocol for a lieutenant to take on a contract from so young a client.

Before she rose to the Lotus chairship, Zijian was careful about keeping her nose clean and her paperwork tidy. Once you were in the big seat, you could skirt the lines—and she observed that Master Minza did his fair share of skirting. But she had no interest in risking her future for some righteous rich girl.

However, Zijian’s refusal of Ysobel’s first request did not end their relationship. Ysobel merely pivoted things in a new direction. She began booking spa treatments with Zijian every ten days or so. She would ask all kinds of questions throughout their meetings. About The Lotus. How the contract killings worked. Its history. What professional assassin society was like. She was fascinated by the culture of death-dealing. Behavior that reminded Zijian of herself at that younger age.

Zijian would give answers, but she never told Ysobel everything. Certainly never told her any of The Lotus’ secrets. And divulged as little as possible about herself. And yet, over time, she felt herself opening up. She appreciated the girl’s combination of intelligence and ambition. And although she would never admit it, she was envious of the girl’s limitless opportunity in the world. Her incredible privilege. So different from Zijian’s own wretched origins in The Guts.

Intimacy grew. Harmless at first. But things started progressing in a more dangerous direction when the girl turned fifteen.

One day, Ysobel showed up to her appointment in distress. The girl kept a brave face until they were alone, then she broke down. Sobbing. She said her boyfriend had assaulted her. Done things to her without permission. She was hurt. Scared. Ashamed.

She was also angry. She wanted revenge. Retaliation. Justice. Whatever you want to call it.

She wanted him dead.

Lo and behold, now that Ysobel was fifteen, there was a Lotus protocol that could work. The girl signed the writ in her own blood. Zijian carried it out.

The boyfriend was some other rich kid. As he begged for his life, he insisted that Ysobel was lying. He said they had both been drinking, had too much, and fooled around a little. Maybe things went too far, but he claimed she was as aggressive about it as he was. He cried. He pleaded. He cursed Ysobel. It did him no good. Zijian was cold fire.
