8.If the storyteller pauses for more than 10 seconds, starts to ramble, or stops making sense, then their turn ends. The storyteller then must draw a card, and the player on the left becomes the new storyteller.
9.When a storyteller has played all other cards in their hand, they can end the story with the Happy Ever After card and win the game.
After the Game
10.Players share the stories with the whole class after play finishes.
CAVEATS AND OPTIONS
1.The game can be played with groups under five. As listed in Appendix C, the fewer students in the group, the more cards each student will get. You may also play it with one big group (e.g., the whole class) with modified rules. In that case, assign a story ending for everyone and deal each participant a single storytelling card. Each student gets to add to the story using the elements on their card and then passes the turn to another storyteller.
2.Self-determined elements can also be used for the gameplay. For example, you can provide students with blank cards (could be cut out of card stock) and have them fill in keywords and concepts from familiar fairy tales in small groups. Shuffle the cards between groups and ask learners to write and share the stories they create.
3.You may introduce new ways to interrupt if you want to emphasize the accuracy of studentsâ language use during storytelling. For example, if anyone spots the storytellerâs grammatical mistakes, that student can take the turn by offering the correct form.
