Of course, it is hard for all institutions to see themselves objectively and dispassionately. The Wall Street business culture is very specific and defined, and the people in that ecosystemâfor the most part menâbelieve itâs a meritocracy. Many of them would disagree if you told them it is not a women-friendly environment, there are thick glass ceilings that create institutional barriers for women, and there is considerable pressure for women to behave like men. When you see how few women have gotten into very senior roles, and the hurdles the women whoâve succeeded on Wall Street have had to leap to get those roles, ultimately, if they donât succeed, itâs not the women that are the problem.
Itâs not just a Wall Street problem. I saw this myself in cable TV programming, where even a Fortune 46 company like Comcast Communications has only one woman in its most senior ranks. And Anne-Marie Slaughter worked for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and has commented often about the Washington political and government world being a close-knit boysâ club.
Just knowing that many of the biases against women are unconscious may be helpful in comprehending why this still goes on in the workplace. Having said that, women are left with the issue of how to advance when men are making most of the promotional decisions.
Work Well with Captains of Industry
Captains of industry dot the business landscape. Theyâre the richest and most powerful. They run the largest companies and sit on the most elite boards. Some have protected and defended the male business hierarchy either consciously or unconsciously for generations. During your career you may work with such captains. Some of you will emerge as captains too, and working with them is good training for that.
