Alexis told him everything: Mark’s solo hunt for Julia’s killer, the discovery that this man was part of an international network of contract killers, Mark’s rescue of a couple from the clutches of that network and – this was the hardest thing of all to reveal – the fact that he had killed the man, without giving him the chance of a fair trial.

Rafael had listened, in near silence, for over an hour, interrupting on only a few occasions to seek clarification or more detail.

‘So you see,’ began Alexis, after concluding her account of events, ‘I never set out to go after her, I just wanted to respect Mark’s last wishes and warn the couple in England that they might be in danger. After that, well … things just sort of spiralled out of control.’

A few anxious seconds of silence ensued before Rafael responded. ‘OK … I get it. And I’m sorry to have judged you the way I did.’

Alexis felt an overwhelming surge of affection towards this man, of whom she had asked far too much. ‘Oh, Rafa … I’m sorry it’s worked out this way.’

‘So am I, but the important thing is where we go from here. In spite of everything, there is one positive to come out of all this: you’re on this woman’s trail now; you have a good photo of her, and you’ve enlisted the help of the UK police. Can’t say I care for that jerk of a superintendent but, in the end, he’s a cop … just like you and me … and in spite of his attitude, I think he really wants to get her.’

‘But what about Lieutenant Bondesan; what are you going to tell him?’

‘I don’t know yet … I need to figure that out.’

‘And what about Mark’s part in all this? I can’t bear to think of his memory being ruined. I mean the fact that he killed a man when he could have arrested him alive was…’ her voice tailed off. ‘In spite of everything, he was a good man, Rafa.’ She paused, struggling to hold her emotions in check. ‘What he did was wrong, but ...’ She couldn’t find the words.

‘I know,’ replied Rafael, his tone soft and understanding. ‘I’ll do what I can to try to keep him out of it.’

The wave of gratitude which swept through her was almost overwhelming. ‘Thank you … thank you for everything. But what are you going to say about how I came to catch up with the suspect … in England of all places?’

‘I haven’t figured that out yet, either. Look, leave that bit to me. You need to stay right on the case over there, working with the UK police. I’ll try to come up with some plausible story for Bondesan; if I can persuade him that we’re in with a good chance of finding this woman, maybe he’ll write to back me up as this Crowthorpe guy has asked.’

‘I … I don’t know what to say, Rafa.’

‘Don’t say anything … just stay on the case.
