Chapter 11

Later the following afternoon, the doorbell rang as Theda cleaned up around her house. She opened the door and came face-to-face with Helena.

“Can I help you?” Theda said coolly.

Helena’s smile was coldly hostile.

“I want to put my cards on the table.”

Theda didn’t respond, she just stepped back and led the way into her living room. She took a chair opposite Helena. She wasn’t going to draw this out. “What’s on your mind?” she asked.

“You’re in love with Hunter,” Helena said.

“Yes.”

“He’s been a little bit in love with you since you were both at Howard.”

“What’s your point?”

“You were between us the whole time we were married. Now I’m going to live between you and him.”

When Theda didn’t respond, Helena continued. “You hurt him terribly and I don’t think he’s ever really forgiven you.”

Theda cleared her throat. “Has he talked about this with you?”

Helena raised her eyebrows. “He was a wreck when I got him. I saved him.”

“You don’t know the whole story,” Theda said flatly.

“Oh, you mean, about your getting married because you were pregnant with his child…” She put a finger to her lips. “No, I’m afraid Curt told me that one about your son—Kelly, I believe his name was.”

“I don’t care to discuss this with you,” Theda said.

Helena nodded. “Perhaps he has forgiven you, but he will never forgive himself for what he did to me.”

Theda had a feeling of unease at the turn in the conversation. Hunter had alluded to a painful secret concerning Helena but he had never explained exactly what had happened.

“It was a grievous thing and I’ve forgiven him, but it has blighted my life and he knows that. He owes me and I’m damned well going to demand payment in full, now.” Her eyes were glittering; she was a study in malevolence.

Theda felt the start of deep, burning anger. She stood up. “Is that all?” she asked with chilly politeness.

Helena gave no indication that she had been dismissed. Instead she looked around her insolently. “You’ve got a nice place here. No wonder Hunter spends so much time with you. I suppose he told you that I’m living with Keatha Ames since he put me out. Keatha has been very kind to me and knows you well.” A small smirk lifted the corners of her mouth. Her eyes fell on the photo of Theda’s late family and she moved to pick up the photo.

Theda’s voice was sharp. “No, don’t touch it. If that’s all, I’m very busy now.”

Helena really was a beautiful woman with her jet-black silk hair and creamy skin, Theda thought. But her smoky gray eyes were clear and cold. If Helena had a heart, it didn’t show.

Helena stood up then. “You know the old saying that forewarned is forearmed. I want you to know what you’re up against. I mean to move heaven and earth to get Hunter back and I’m not used to losing. I’m sure you’ll tell him about this little visit.”

“You’re right, I will.” Theda would be damned if she was going to wish her a pleasant evening.
