On the drive to his apartment they kept the peace. He gave up grilling her about the man who stopped to help when she broke down last night, and she gave up trying to figure out why he was so riled about it. And the main reason she backed down was because she’d figured it out. They took the same scenic route back as he had taken on the way out, driving eight miles in the wrong direction before returning to the city and his apartment forty minutes later than they would otherwise have needed to. And most of that drive he spent with his eyes on the road behind rather than the road ahead. Which meant he was either paranoid or he knew he was being followed. The main thing concerning her was by who.

She remained tight-lipped about it that afternoon when he talked her through what he’d learned of the cartels and what he believed the Martinez family to be involved in back home. Then they discussed and researched more on their prime target, Cameron Bonnier – what clients he’d worked for over the years, what causes he and his company supported, and the sort of people he was seen associating with. Less of a political figure, in the early years he had attached himself more to celebrities of TV, film and sport, but since the trial had retreated from that spotlight almost entirely. The most recent photographs of him were either business-related or connected to the case. Cass agreed she would talk to Melissa about what information she had on Bonnier’s business dealings and how much they might realistically be able to get, even though she felt she already knew the answer to that. They would need good reason to go poking about in the millionaire’s finances – a hunch that not all of his money was clean wouldn’t be enough.

When they broke for food early evening, Cass persuaded Hoss to pick up takeout so that she’d be left alone with his new roommate. Josh had been hiding out in his room while they worked, but reappeared when his stomach called, and was now pulling plates from the cupboard and setting them on the counter while they waited for the food to arrive.

‘Sorry about banishing you to your room again,’ Cass said, when he turned to take cutlery from the drawer.

‘No worries. The work you do is important. I understand.’

She edged forward on the stool, folding her arms on the countertop. Hoss wouldn’t be long, so she’d have to be quick. ‘Josh, can I talk to you a sec?’

He stopped what he was doing and looked up. Pale gray eyes looked uncertain until he broke out into a grin and they softened. ‘We’re not doing that already?’ he asked, but bumped the drawer closed with his hip and came around the counter to sit on the stool next to her. She didn’t know him all that well but she did know he thought a lot of his landlord.
