Poem

“Out Like That”

I’m not a songwriter by any stretch. Just wish I was. But it’s not uncommon for me to jot down title ideas or lyrics. I do it all the time. “Out Like That” is from one of those moments where I was inspired to write by something I witnessed. I was on the couch watching the 2010 college football BCS National Championship game between Alabama and Texas. During the first drive of the game Texas’s quarterback, Colt McCoy, was injured when Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus hit him in the shoulder. His arm went numb and he was done. Boom. Over. McCoy had one of the best careers in college football history. He’s a Longhorns legend. And there it went, out, just like that. I was corresponding with a songwriter friend of mine during that game, and I said, “Man, you ain’t supposed to go out like that.” He wrote back, “That’s a song. Or at worst a good title. You write your side and I’ll write mine, and we’ll meet in the middle and see what happens.” “Out Like That” is my side. Years later I drank a beer with McCoy at the Preakness Stakes and got to share this story with him. The shocked expression on his face was worth every minute of the wait.
