Ian was coming.

You know when you get really excited about something, so excited that it can never measure up in real life when it finally happens? Everything worked that way. This was going to be my first summer really alive. The first summer since I started taking the subway every day by myself. I had a date with a brick wall every night, my shoulder shoved into it, cocked steep so I looked like a slutty East Village piece of trash. Only, you know, with better self-esteem. I loved imagining myself trashy.

This summer I was supposed to try out the person I always wanted to be, take her for a test drive. Instead, I was actually turning into the person I always wanted to be, and portraying someone completely different on a television show eight hours every day.

It was enough to drive a sane girl schizophrenic.

Yeah, I told myself. It’s a good thing I have friends in the outside world.
