FEAR REALLY sucked. Once it got started, it took root, and the more one worried or tried to get rid of it, the deeper the damned roots dug. And every time it was pulled out, it came back stronger.

Ash hated fear, but he spent much of the day wondering what he was going to do. To make matters worse, he kept looking out the front windows every time he went into the living room, expecting to find Musalla looking back at him.

“You need to settle down,” Aunt Petey told him.

Ash agreed with her, but when he tried, the damned fear returned even more voraciously. In the Army he’d always been taught to use the fear, to push it down and transform it to make him stronger. He kept trying, but it didn’t work. Back then they would’ve been going into battle or on some mission and he would have needed that energy. But this was sitting at home with his aunt, whom he needed to protect, and waiting to see if the one person on earth who had made part of his life a complete and actual living hell was going to return. Fuck, he hoped not.

The soft clang of metal on wood broke him out of his fear-induced haze, and he stared at the gun on the coffee table.

“I’ve got bullets too. They’re in my room upstairs in the stand beside the bed.”

“Jesus.” He lifted the gun and checked the chambers. “Damn, it’s loaded.”

“Of course it is. Your uncle taught me how to use it too. Go upstairs and get the extra ammunition from the bottom drawer in my room, and if whoever you keep looking for shows up, blow their fucking head off.”

More and more she shocked him.

“I’ll get the ammunition in a bit.” He carefully unloaded the gun and set it back on the table with the ammunition resting next to it. “Let’s hope it won’t come to this.”

Aunt Petey sat down, placing her knitting bag next to her. “Of course that’s what we hope. But we also prepare for what we have to.” She went back to her knitting, and Ash thought, not for the first time, that his aunt would have made one hell of a general.

The house got quiet once more, and Ash ran through scenario after scenario, trying to determine what the most likely outcome was. What was most likely was that nothing would happen, but that he couldn’t guarantee. No. What he needed to do was leave and set a trail away from here and the people he cared for. Ash was a warrior, or at least he used to be.

He turned his attention to his leg in the brace and the dull pain throbbing in it. There was a time, knowing that Musalla was in the country, that he would have taken the gun Aunt Petey had given him and hunted the man down. But that wasn’t in the cards. Everyone would see him coming. No, his best chance to protect the people in his life was to get as far away from here as he could.
