Chapter 8 — Liam

Over the past few years, I’d had many girls on the back of my bike, but no one made me feel the way Paige Locklear did, with her hands wrapped around my waist, her chin resting on my shoulder. As the air flew through her hair, the delicious coconut scent consumed me.

I don’t know what it is about this girl.

“So where are we going?” Paige asked as we climbed Mount Honey, her hands grasping tighter to the fabric of my jacket as she pulled herself closer to me.

Don’t get distracted. Answer her question.

“You really aren’t good with surprises, are you?”

She lifted her head from my shoulder. “Not at all.”

We came to the crest of the mountain, and I parked my bike in a pull-off area where another motorcycle and a Subaru Outback were parked.

We hopped off and I helped Paige with the buckle on her helmet. As I unclasped the hook below her chin, my hand lingered on her smooth cheek. She leaned her head in my hand and sighed.

I wanted to kiss her so bad.

Not yet.

Instead, I let my hand fall from her face and then pointed ahead.

“Wow!” Paige exclaimed, her eyes taking in the view we had from just behind the guardrail—the bouquet of green treetops of Cedar Valley.

Paige sucked in air. “This is beautiful.”

I couldn’t peel my eyes away from her face. “It is.” I swallowed and grabbed her hand. “But this isn’t the surprise.”

“Really?” Her eyebrows furrowed. “But this view is amazing.”

“There’s an even better one.” I opened a compartment under the driver’s seat and pulled out a small cooler and then gestured to a dirt path that led up the side of the mountain. “Good thing you’re wearing the right shoes.”

Her eyes grew wide. “We’re going higher up?”

“It you think this view’s amazing, then just wait.”

I could see some sort of internal battle within Paige as she fiddled with her fingers.

“I’ll hold your hand the entire time,” I assured her.

She let out a sigh and then smiled. “Outside my comfort zone,” she said, playing with the hem of her jacket. “I’ve never been hiking.”

“Well, then it’s a good thing this isn’t real hiking.” I pointed to the top of the mountain. “We only have about a seven-minute walk, and the incline is not steep whatsoever.”

“Great. Baby steps.”

I gave her the side eye. “Never hiked before?” I teased.

She tilted her head. “Haven’t you figured me out by now? Paige Locklear, queen of playing it safe,” she said strait-laced.

I laughed. “Queen of playing it safe, indeed.” I wrapped my hand around hers and tugged her toward the trail’s beginning. “I’m glad you’re stepping out of your box with me.”

She turned toward me and my breath hitched as her eyes met mine. “I am too.”

She didn’t let go of my hand the entire hike to the summit. We got to the top where a lookout area, complete with three benches, sat. To the right of the lookout was a makeshift trail of trampled-down plants and dirt that led to a series of three large boulders, each spreading at least six feet in width.
