“Hold her down!” someone is yelling, but I can’t recognize the voice.

When I feel arms tightening around my own, I struggle with everything in me.

“Moon-damned bastards!” I yell, snapping at whoever has dared to try to capture me. At least that’s what I mean to yell. What comes out is something like “Snerf blub galoo.”

“Never! Never, it’s us!” My mind is sluggish and my vision blurred as I blink. The face in front of me might be Lynx, or it might be a trick.

I kick my legs and feel my heel connect with something.

“Son of a—. You great numpty, we’re trying to help you!”

“Jackal?”

Never, you’ve been poisoned. You need to let us help. It’s Nahum’s voice in my mind, but I can’t see him. I twist and yank against the people holding me, trying to find the dragon.

An antlered face shoves itself inches from my own.

“Blasted crazed Were! Would you hold still? You’re going to end up hurting one of us, and don’t even think of calling that damned scythe! The state you’re in, you wouldn’t catch it, and with our luck one of us would take a blade to the noggin.”

Elios. I know it’s Elios, and he feels both rankled and worried. I don’t even remember him coming with us.

“Nahum?” My voice sounds slurred and weak, but I need answers. “What?”

“Elios followed Tom and Cynthia out here, and it’s a good thing. The Faetyr is helping Azalea repurpose a few ingredients she brought along. According to her, antidotes take longer than poisons, what with it not being her key. We won’t be able to fully cure you until we’re back at the vampsion, but she wants to give you something to make you steady enough to get that far. If we move you like this, you might keel over.” His emotions are shaking with fear, and it sobers me just a bit.

What could be seconds or an hour later, as far as my addled mind is concerned, Elios replaces Nahum again in my field of vision.

“We’ve got something that’ll get you back on your feet until we’re back at the vampsion. You won’t feel good by any means, but you’ll be mobile. We’ll fix the rest once we get you home, but you have to drink all of this, okay?”

I try to agree, but he’s gone before I can. Azalea’s black hair falls against my face, tickling my cheek.

“Bottoms up!” she says gleefully, shoving a glass vial into my mouth and tipping the contents down my throat. I sputter, but she puts her other hand over my lips, making sure I don’t lose any of this foul, cursed beverage.

It’s like drinking crusty socks with a rotten-egg chaser.

When she finally removes the vial, I twist away from her and gag.

“Don’t vomit up all my hard work!” she chastises.

My innards are in full-on rebellion, but everything else feels instantly better. My mind clears, and the tingly feeling in my limbs fades.

“Thanks,” I manage as I push up off my knees. My breath tastes like the inside of a high school locker room’s dirty laundry basket.
